Live Documents offers a "Services PLUS Software" value proposition - the primary intended use case is to leverage the capabilities of productivity applications within a browser - nothing to download or install. However, we realize that internet connectivity is not ubiquitious...yet.
So, we offer a software component to complement the service - users can optionally download a desktop client that plugs into Microsoft Office and converts these standalone applications to web-enabled smart clients. In addition to providing collaborative capabilities, the desktop version enables offline access.
